ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING TO ADULTS (UCLES CELTA)

This course is widely considered as the world’s leading TEFL initial teacher training course. It is a minimum teaching requirement for EFL in many countries of the world.

The development of the syllabus and assessment has involved a long process of consultation with the English Language Teaching profession in centres spread across the globe. Every effort has been made to ensure that syllabus and assessment developments are in line with the perceived needs of centres, employers, CELTA candidates and ELT professionals internationally, and that they reflect and extend the best of current practice. A major part of the course includes observed teaching practice. Trainers and tutors are internationally accredited and approved by UCLES.

The CELTA course follows the full-time intensive format over four weeks. It consists of a minimum of 120 contact hours, although you should calculate at least double that to include lesson planning and preparation and course assignments (4). Entry on this course is subject to an interview process, for which you should allocate about three hours.

Successful participants will receive an UCLES Certificate.

No of hours:120 contact hours
At least another 120 non-contact hours
Max number of trainees: 6 per trainer
12 trainees per course on current staffing levels

THE TELEPHONE INTERVIEW

As you are most probably unable to attend a face-to-face interview, we will need to hold a telephone interview. We would like to remind you that the telephone charges are borne by the applicant. We would also like to advise you that elements that would normally emerge during the course of a face-to-face interview may not become apparent during the course of a telephone interview. The centre cannot be held responsible should such elements become problematic during the UCLES CELTA.

In order to reduce the time spent on administrative details during the interview, we would like to bring the following points to your attention. You might like to ask us for further information or clarification during the interview.

  • Although there are four possible grades (Pass, Pass ‘B’, Pass ‘A’, and Fail), it is the Pass grade that you need to aim for.
  • Even though you may be accepted on the course, there is the possibility that you may obtain a Fail grade.
  • Grading is based on continuous assessment. You will therefore receive continuous oral and written feedback on your progress throughout the course from an early stage. This will include at least one one-to-one tutorial (usually held at the course halfway point), during which you will be told whether at that particular stage of the course you are passing or failing, and what you need to do in order to make further progress.
  • There will be a daily teaching practice session in which you and your colleagues will observe each other teaching genuine students. The session will also be observed and assessed by one of your course tutors. After the lesson, feedback will be conducted in which you and your colleagues will discuss each others’ teaching. Your tutor will also contribute.
  • Honesty, sensitivity and tact will be needed at all times. You will also need to be able to listen to evaluations of your teaching, suggestions and advice in a constructive manner.
  • You will need to be able to work well in a group, and to be co-operative and supportive at all times. Inability to operate well in pair work and group work may hinder your progress (and that of your colleagues). Similarly, you will also need to be able to work independently.
  • There are four assessed, written assignments that you are required to complete within the deadlines provided to you. The deadlines are spread throughout the course.
  • You are required to teach for a total of six hours and to observe experienced teachers for a minimum of eight hours.
  • One hundred per cent attendance is required by UCLES. Only under exceptional circumstances are candidates permitted to be absent. RSA UCLES will not issue a Certificate if attendance is less than eighty per cent for any course component. This regulation is applied whatever the reason for absence. If you withdraw from the course at any point, we regret that you will not be eligible for a refund for either part or whole of the course.
  • The course is extremely intensive. Past candidates report that they spend an average of 14-16 hours a day on coursework on site and at home. This estimate will often include whole or part of each weekend during the course. Clearly, this leaves little time for any other pursuits. You will need to be totally focused on the course. Candidates living with friends or partners are advised that they will find it difficult to find time to socialize during the course.

Lastly, although the course is intensive and at times can be physically and emotionally demanding, most candidates have assessed it as being extremely rewarding.
