Diving in Malta
Malta is the unique place for diving where you can find a lot of opportunities both for beginners and for professional divers. Malta, Gozo and Comino- three rocky islands in the middle of the Mediterranean –is the most popular diving place in Europe. Pure crystal water allows you to see the underwater landscape in all its severe splendor.
Strict sharp-cut lines and gaping mouths of caves, fractures and crevices in the rocks attract the attention and fascinate… Once in the cave one cannot cease to marvel at fantasy of the nature which carved from sandstone such sculptural masterpieces.
The most famous place in Gozo and in Malta is the Blue Hole. This is a natural well with sheer walls, surrounded by picturesque canyons. If you look at it from the mountain it seems a bright blue window.
Swimming to the left of the hole you can reach the Azzuro Window-another popular site for diving. This is a grandiose rocky arch overhanging the sea. If you come to the surface in the arch it makes a strong impression of its monumentality.
On the other side from the “blue hole”one can find a “coral cave”. its walls and ceiling are covered with a dense layer of ascidians and very beautiful calcareous bryozoans, which local divers mistakenly referred to as coral.
Not far from the Blue Hole and Azzuro Window one can find another popular diving site-the Inland Sea. This is a tiny lake, surrounded by rocks and connected with the sea through the breach in the cliffs. The narrow passage looks very picturesque on the surface and under water.
The local authorities demand from the scuba diving centers full information about all the divers who use their services. You will be asked to produce an international diving certificate and medical certificate. They will xerox them put into a separate folder and keep them for several years. Then you will sign that you take off the responsibility from the diving center for your life and health and that you have a healthy heart and no chronic respiratory diseases.
